Penrice Academy Winners announced of bag design competition, raising awareness of Environment and Business.

Penrice Academy was one a few schools within Cornwall to take part in a competition to design a jute bag, organised by local promotional product business GoJute Ltd.

The competition took place at the beginning of the year, with every student submitting a design either depicting school colours, aspirational words and underwater themes, with strong messages showing real understanding of why the 5p bag tax was introduced last October.

Deputy Headteacher, Miss Gambier said: “The students have gained a true understanding of the design and production process for such a product and have thoroughly enjoyed the creative aspect. The competition has been an invaluable experience for all the pupils involved, and we have been so proud of their approach and understanding of wider issues such as the environment”.

GoJute’s Gary Warren and Richard Hibbs were particularly excited to revisit their old secondary school representing their business. Gary commented, “We gave a presentation to all the pupils at Penrice, based on our products and how they are made and their production process. This of course highlights the environmental impact our products may have and the steps we take to reduce. The pupils really took this on board which shone through within their designs”.

The winners of the competition were Ella, Maddy and Emily year 7, who have been chosen to feature on the front of the bag, and Cali, Beth and Maisy from Year 8, who created the design chosen for the back.

Penrice Academy teacher Miss Gambier told them “Your concepts show the important environmental side and the designs themselves are stunning; and the team at GoJute are really, really impressed!”

The designs were finalised, printed and produced last month, and every student and staff member at Penrice were given a sample of the finished product.

Plastic bag usage has slumped by around 80%* and remains static. The UK’s largest retailer Tesco said in December that the number of bags had been slashed by 78% since the charge was introduced, while at Morrisons, plastic bag consumption was down 80% across its stores*. Each major retailer (of more than 250 employees) is required under the regulations to report to the government by the end of May so the national, official picture should become clear in June.

Due to the success of the plastic bag tax, GoJute will be rolling out a National campaign for schools to design their own jute bag in the summer; raising awareness of the impact business production can have on our climate. In addition, the competition introduces the children to the challenges that businesses in Cornwall and the UK face, in order to meet their environmental objectives.

Well done to everyone who entered!
